Maria Hadjimichael

What is your name and DG?
Maria Hadjimichael, Communications Unit, DG MARE

Who is your personal hero?
I never know what to answer here! I admire different people for different reasons; in terms of academics I would say Elinor Ostrom, who got a Nobel prize in Economic Sciences in 2009, especially for her work on the economics of common proterty resources (fish are a common proterty resource for example!); in terms of journalists I would say Georgo Monbiot despite his latest articles supporting nuclear energy. But the person who inspired me since I was a child is of course Captain Planet!

Trying to be part of a movement that wants to make a change is not easy.  To start with, you have to first convince people that ‘common people’ have the power to change things.  At the same time, you also have to convince those ‘in power’ that a change is needed and propose ways to make that change happen!

In their attempts to bring about change (that be environmental, social or other), dreamers choose different ways. There are the grassroot ‘fighters’ and the high level negotiators.  There are also people somewhere in the middle, who lobby, do research etc.  In my proposed presentation, I will try to take people through my personal journey of ‘making a change’ and giving my opinion on what I have seen on what works and what does not.  And in my experience, the bottom line is one: the important thing is not so much how you are trying to bring about change, but for the heart to be at the right place!

What is your favourite TED talk and why?
There are so many amazing talks that I find it really hard to choose one!  But this recent one from TEDxNicosia shows the amazing bicommunal initiatives in Cyprus, a subjct close to my heart. I would love that everyone watches it!
